Hoo boy, this fellow has been busy!
I got to Sioux Lookout on Sunday, met my fishing guide Chris Edwards in town, and down to the water taxi we went for a forty mile ride down Lac Seul to the lodge owned by Ken Robins, Lac Seul Outposts. Ken had served with one of my best buddies Marcel back in the 70s, and Marcel "introduced" me to him via e-mail. I had never met Ken before Sunday, but it was like we had known each other for decades, with many mutual friends, colleagues, and experiences. Ken broke his neck a couple months ago, and miraculously appears to have no serious long-term damage. BUT he cannot be in a boat for a year. So a visit turned into a guided fishing trip with Ken's top guide.
First order of business was to catch enough walleye for supper. Ken told Chris to take me out and to bring back half a dozen eating size walleye. In fairly short order we caught a couple dozen fish, and saved six for the pan. After a couple drinks, Ken fried up the fresh fillets, and there are few culinary treats that can top fresh walleye!
The next day Chris and I spent about eight hours out on the big lake (it is a hundred miles long!) and boated about three dozen walleye, sauger and "saugeye" which is a cross between the first two. We did not put any monsters in the livewell, but caught a number of nice chunky walleye which were in the "slot limit" and had to be returned to the water. I had orders from my next host to bring fresh walleye fillets with me, so I kept my limit of four to accompany me on my way.
A group of American anglers was leaving the next morning, so I hitched a VERY early ride on the water taxi - we left the dock at 5:30 am............and hit Sioux Lookout at 7 am. Chris and I enjoyed a breakfast at a local restaurant and we went our separate ways.
I did not go far before the short nights caught up with me, and I went to Ojibway Provincial Park just south of town. There I took the chance to pump bilges on the camper, had a lovely hot shower, and snoozed for a few hours. Then back to the road....................
My hosts at Rossport and Lac Seul apparently have nerves of steel and feet of lead, as their estimates for how long it takes to drive a given distance bear no resemblance whatsoever to my actual experience. The "four hours" to Beausejour took me about seven...............but I did make a couple stops and also lost an hour driving through Kenora, which I could and should have avoided.
Last evening I arrived at the home of my CGN buddy "two dogs." Wayne and his family live on a rural property north of Beausejour MB. We met each other for the first time and of course enjoyed a couple drinks and some grand conversations.
My laptop just informed me I have a few minutes left before it crashes, so I will continue this anon.
Doug
