Whirlwind tour

Hoo boy, this fellow has been busy!

I got to Sioux Lookout on Sunday, met my fishing guide Chris Edwards in town, and down to the water taxi we went for a forty mile ride down Lac Seul to the lodge owned by Ken Robins, Lac Seul Outposts.  Ken had served with one of my best buddies Marcel back in the 70s, and Marcel "introduced" me to him via e-mail.  I had never met Ken before Sunday, but it was like we had known each other for decades, with many mutual friends, colleagues, and experiences.  Ken broke his neck a couple months ago, and miraculously appears to have no serious long-term damage.  BUT he cannot be in a boat for a year.  So a visit turned into a guided fishing trip with Ken's top guide.

First order of business was to catch enough walleye for supper.  Ken told Chris to take me out and to bring back half a dozen eating size walleye.  In fairly short order we caught a couple dozen fish, and saved six for the pan.  After a couple drinks, Ken fried up the fresh fillets, and there are few culinary treats that can top fresh walleye!

The next day Chris and I spent about eight hours out on the big lake (it is a hundred miles long!) and boated about three dozen walleye, sauger and "saugeye" which is a cross between the first two.  We did not put any monsters in the livewell, but caught a number of nice chunky walleye which were in the "slot limit" and had to be returned to the water.  I had orders from my next host to bring fresh walleye fillets with me, so I kept my limit of four to accompany me on my way.

A group of American anglers was leaving the next morning, so I hitched a VERY early ride on the water taxi - we left the dock at 5:30 am............and hit Sioux Lookout at 7 am.  Chris and I enjoyed a breakfast at a local restaurant and we went our separate ways.

I did not go far before the short nights caught up with me, and I went to Ojibway Provincial Park just south of town.  There I took the chance to pump bilges on the camper, had a lovely hot shower, and snoozed for a few hours.  Then back to the road....................

My hosts at Rossport and Lac Seul apparently have nerves of steel and feet of lead, as their estimates for how long it takes to drive a given distance bear no resemblance whatsoever to my actual experience.  The "four hours" to Beausejour took me about seven...............but I did make a couple stops and also lost an hour driving through Kenora, which I could and should have avoided.

Last evening I arrived at the home of my CGN buddy "two dogs."  Wayne and his family live on a rural property north of Beausejour MB.  We met each other for the first time and of course enjoyed a couple drinks and some grand conversations.

My laptop just informed me I have a few minutes left before it crashes, so I will continue this anon.

What day is this?

"If it's Tuesday, this must be Belgium."

Did anybody else see that movie?  Must have been early 70s I think.....................

I believe it must be Saturday.  I have been on the road for three days and I am still in Ontario, this is really one big freakin' province!  First night I got to Sudbury and stayed in the driveway of my gun show buddy Ken.  Last night I met a guy I have been dealing with for many years but never met (Mad Dog from CGN), and I stayed in the parking lot of a motel in Wawa.  Today I drove to Rossport, went fishing with another lad from CGN, "Chas" and it was a beautiful day, only caught one fish but had several others on and lost them, and the weather was glorious,  Then I drove to Thunder Bay and met up with my buddy Bob (m1garandfather on CGN), had a fabulous dinner prepared by his Ukrainian bride Nelia, and I am staying in Bob`s driveway and stealing somebody`s (unsecured) wireless internet signal (apparently).

A bonus today was also meeting Joe, aka FNC1 on CGN.  He and Bob had been at a gun show locally abd Bob invited him over so we could meet each other.  FABULOUS to finally meet so many CGNers I have dealt with, but never met in person!

Tomorrow I drive to Sioux Lookout to meet a lad who owns a fishing lodge on Lac Seul - plan to do some walleye fishing and then on to Beausejour MB to meet Wayne two dogs from CGN.

OK this freakinè laptop just switched me to a French keyboard, how the heck do I get back to anglaisÉ

Later!

Looks like we made it!

Well, MOST of the stuff is packed and I think I can get the rest of it done in time to hit the road mid-morning tomorrow.  If I miss that timing, a lot of stuff goes out the window and I will be sleeping in Walmart parking lots or whatever.

My timing at Sioux Lookout to go walleye fishing at Lac Seul Outposts is (very thankfully) pretty flexible.  Of the fishing bits on this trip, walleye on Lac Seul is number one unless I get out for halibut again.  I REALLY want to catch a halibut!!!

And "hopefully" I will be able to use my laptop, which I have not yet even test-driven, and be able to add to this little report.

Doug

one more sleep.........

Well HOPEFULLY I will hit the road tomorrow.  Had a bit of a disaster Monday - put gasoline in my diesel truck and then drove it three hundred kilometres.  My truck was unhappy.  But one tow job and a thousand bucks later, it looks like we are good to go.

I just hope I can figure out how to use this thing from my laptop once I am outta here.........

Hmmmm, that does not appear to work.  I wonder if I CAN post pictures here.........
OK it looks like I now have a BLOG.  Sounds like I have a shameful disease or something.

Let's see if I can figure out how to post a picture here.

Doug's Great Western Road Trip

OK, I have never had a "BLOG."  In fact I am not sure if I SHOULD have one.  But just for fun, I am going to give this a try.

I am driving to the Yukon and back, over the next couple months, and want to be able to let a bunch of folks know where I am and what's been happening.

So let's see how this works out.
